A new school year, a move, or a return to school after a difficult period can bring excitement and worry. Teens may face unfamiliar routines, social uncertainty, and pressure to adjust quickly. Parents may notice irritability, sleep trouble, withdrawal, or repeated worries.

Some nervousness is a normal response to change. If anxiety persists or interferes with sleep, relationships, attendance, or daily life, consider added support. Families can help teens build coping skills through communication, preparation, and help from trusted adults.

## Why can school and life transitions feel hard for teens?

Starting high school may mean a larger building, harder classes, a new schedule, and unfamiliar peers. Changing schools can mean leaving friends and learning new social expectations. Returning after anxiety, illness, or family stress may bring worries about missed work or falling behind.

Teens may show stress through anger, [avoidance](https://powerofhopema.com/power-of-hope/school-avoidance-anxiety-teens-massachusetts), physical complaints, sleep changes, or pulling away from friends. These signs can have many causes. Notice patterns and invite a conversation rather than trying to diagnose based on one behavior.

## How can parents support a teen starting high school or changing schools?

**Talk before the transition.** Ask what feels exciting and what feels uncertain: “What part feels like the biggest unknown?” Listen before offering solutions. Your teen may need reassurance, planning help, or room to express worries.

**Make the unfamiliar more familiar.** If possible, visit the school, review the schedule, or attend orientation. Identify where your teen can go for help, such as the counselor’s office or nurse.

**Break big changes into smaller steps.** Focus on the first few days: prepare materials, identify a trusted adult, and choose one manageable way to connect with peers. Adjust the plan as your teen learns what helps.

**Keep steady routines.** Regular sleep, meals, movement, and downtime add predictability. Build routines with your teen and prepare what you can the night before.

**Support connection without forcing it.** Ask whether your teen wants to reconnect with a friend, join an activity, or have a quieter first week. One familiar relationship or interest can help a new setting feel less overwhelming. Let your teen choose a pace that feels possible, while keeping communication open about what is and is not working.

## What if a teen is returning after a difficult period?

A return after mental health concerns, illness, family disruption, or an extended absence may require more support. Your teen may worry about missed assignments, classmates’ questions, or managing a full schedule. Discuss these concerns with your teen and, when appropriate, the school and care team.

With your teen, contact a school counselor, nurse, or trusted teacher before the return. Ask what supports are available. A plan might include a check-in person, help catching up, or a gradual schedule. Individualize it with the school and care team.

Avoid promising everything will be easy. Focus on today: “You don’t have to figure out the whole semester. What would make the first day more manageable?”

## Coping skills teens can practice

[Coping skills](https://powerofhopema.com/power-of-hope/coping-with-teen-anxiety-and-self-harm-tips-for-parents) do not erase stress, but they can help teens respond with more flexibility. They might try:

- **Name the feeling.** Identifying “I’m nervous about lunch” can make a broad worry easier to discuss and plan for.
- **Use a grounding pause.** Take a few slow breaths, notice the feet on the floor, or name a few things seen and heard in the room.
- **Plan one next step.** Break an overwhelming task into a small action, such as emailing a teacher or packing a backpack.
- **Reach out to someone safe.** Identify a friend, family member, teacher, or school staff member the teen can contact.
- **Make room for recovery time.** Quiet activities, hobbies, movement, and rest can help teens reset between demands.

Offer choices, not assignments. Ask what seems useful; teens are more likely to try strategies they helped choose.

## When should parents seek professional support?

Talk with your teen’s pediatrician or a licensed mental health professional when distress persists, worsens, or disrupts attendance, sleep, relationships, or daily functioning. Seek guidance sooner if your teen expresses hopelessness, mentions self-harm, or feels unsafe. A professional can assess what may be contributing and discuss support. NIMH recommends sharing observations from people who see the teen in different settings, including school.

If your teen may be in immediate danger or cannot stay safe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. In the United States, call or text **988** for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
