As a parent, caregiver, or mentor, knowing how to support a teen with depression is critical.[At Power of Hope](https://powerofhopema.com/) we work with teens and families every day to manage mental health challenges and foster hope. ## Signs of Teen Depression Teen depression can look different from adult depression. Common symptoms include: - Irritability or anger - Loss of interest in activities - Withdrawal from family and friends - Fatigue and low energy - Changes in sleep or eating habits - Feelings of worthlessness Start an Open Conversation Talking to your teen about depression requires sensitivity and patience. Choose a quiet time and a safe space. Let them know you’re there to listen without judgment. ## Encourage Seeking Professional Help Support your teen in finding a therapist or counselor who specializes in adolescent therapy. At Power of Hope Youth Center, we offer counseling services designed specifically for teens. We also help families connect with psychiatrists if medication evaluation is needed. - Create a Supportive Environment - Maintain a predictable routine - Encourage healthy sleep, nutrition, and exercise habits - Reduce stressors when possible (e.g., over-scheduling, family conflict) - Celebrate small wins and progress - Involve the School Reach out to your teen’s school counselors or teachers to create a support plan. Adjustments like extended time for assignments, safe spaces to decompress, or check-ins with a trusted adult can make a significant difference. ## Don’t Ignore Warning Signs of Depression If your teen talks about suicide or shows signs of self-harm, seek help immediately.
